The Why

You Don’t Have to Figure It Out Alone

The first days and weeks with a newborn can bring so many questions: Is my baby latching correctly? Are they getting enough milk? Why does feeding hurt? When should I pump? How do I know when my milk is coming in?

A lactation consultant is there to help you answer those questions—and so much more.

A lactation consultant is a trained healthcare professional who specializes in infant feeding and lactation. A lactation consultant provides individualized, hands-on support to help parents understand how their baby feeds, identify what may be making feeding difficult, and develop a plan that works for their family.

What Does a Lactation Consultant Actually Do?

During a lactation consultation, your consultant may:

  • Watch a feeding and assess your baby’s latch, positioning, sucking, swallowing, and overall feeding behavior.
  • Help with positioning and latch to make feeding more comfortable and effective.
  • Assess milk transfer and help you understand whether your baby is effectively removing milk from the breast or chest.
  • Address painful feeding, including nipple pain, soreness, engorgement, clogged ducts, or other common concerns.
  • Help with milk supply concerns, including strategies for increasing, protecting, or managing milk production.
  • Support pumping, including choosing appropriate pump settings, flange fit, pumping frequency, and ways to make pumping more comfortable and effective.
  • Help with combination feeding, including breastfeeding alongside expressed milk or formula.
  • Support families experiencing feeding challenges related to prematurity, NICU stays, oral-motor difficulties, weight concerns, or other newborn needs.
  • Teach you how to read your baby’s feeding cues and recognize signs that your baby is hungry, satisfied, or may need additional support.
  • Create an individualized feeding plan based on your baby’s needs and your goals—not someone else’s idea of what feeding should look like.
  • Provide education and reassurance so you can feel more confident making feeding decisions for your baby.
  • Know when to refer you to another healthcare professional when a concern falls outside the scope of lactation care.

Support for Every Feeding Journey

Lactation care isn't about convincing you to breastfeed or telling you there is only one right way to feed your baby. It’s about giving you information, practical tools, and compassionate support so you can make informed choices.

Whether your goal is exclusive breastfeeding, chestfeeding, pumping, combination feeding, transitioning between feeding methods, or simply figuring out what works for you and your baby, you deserve support without judgment.

Having an experienced lactation consultant by your side can turn those overwhelming “Am I doing this right?” moments into “Okay, I understand what my baby needs, and I know what to do next.”

You’re learning your baby. Your baby is learning you. You don’t have to learn it all alone.
